Millions of years ago, what we now know as Northern Arizona was a very different place. At the dawn of the era of dinosaurs, the deserts were dominated by a massive pine forest. The Painted Desert and Petrified Forest of Arizona come from the 225 million year old Chinle Formation, the preservation at a time where dinosaurs had yet to become the massive behemoths of our imagination, and where the wild west was a mild, temperate climate. These forests have long since left us, but their remains have endured in the form of beautiful fossils that dot the landscape. The remains of these trees have been replaced by vibrant quartz, which creates unique patterns where there was once wood.
